Research methodology
How we review recommendations
Every roundup begins with the reader’s decision, then evaluates choices against clear category-specific criteria.
Our method
For product roundups, we compare published specifications, intended use, setup requirements, ongoing-care tradeoffs, and source evidence. We explain why each item appears and what may make it a poor fit.
For care, plant, and tank-mate recommendations, we focus on the relevant environment, compatibility conditions, and limitations rather than treating a list as a guarantee.
What we verify
We verify material product facts against appropriate sources where possible, including capacity, dimensions, included equipment, food form, filtration details, or care requirements. Availability and retailer listings can change, so they are checked again before publication updates.
We keep source citations separate from commercial links so readers can see the evidence behind a recommendation.
How rankings work
A top position reflects the stated criteria and the intended reader, not a universal claim that one item is right for everyone. A strong alternative may be a better match for a different tank, budget, or maintenance preference.
